The Institute for Public and Social Good (IPSG) is an independent coalition of scholars who believe that rigorous research must never be separated from the people and communities it is meant to serve. We are scholars, strategists, and storytellers. We are builders of coalitions and stewards of public data. Our expertise spans sociology, economics, public policy, law, education, and health, but our shared purpose is singular: to advance knowledge in service of justice, always grounded in the voices and visions of the communities we serve.
Building Opportunity, Together
IPSG embodies a spirit that reflects a commitment to abundance and the expansion of possibilities. We envision a nation where research and action move hand in hand, bridging disciplines, methodologies, and communities to strengthen the public good.
We create spaces rooted in authentic collaboration, where scholars and communities work side by side to turn knowledge into action. In doing so, we affirm that justice is not an aspiration but a shared responsibility; one that strengthens our democracy and expands opportunity for all.

Turning research into action and action into change
IPSG transforms rigorous academic research into accessible, actionable solutions for policymakers and communities alike. Our work bridges evidence and lived experience, translating data into strategies that expand education access, strengthen workforce development, and drive community investment, always in partnership with those most affected by the policies we seek to improve. All while upholding the democratic values that make America strong.
At IPSG, we are driven by an urgent imperative: to expand opportunities that are lasting and community based
In a democracy, access to opportunity should not depend on zip code, family wealth, socio-racial classifications, or momentary political winds. Yet across America, many do not have the opportunity to fully contribute to the nation's economic prosperity.
Our research confronts this reality head-on. We investigate the causes behind economic and social instability, document them, and identify pathways for policy and community action that advance opportunity and strengthen democracy. We then help transform those insights into real world change by supporting reforms, partnerships, and movements that make systems more just and resilient. By investigating law, social science, and community experience we tackle the questions that matter most: Where do barriers to opportunity exist? How do they operate across different communities? What strategies can ensure that everybody can succeed? And most importantly, how do we build solutions that help people over institutions?
With this in mind, our research spans three interconnected domains, forming the architecture of opportunity in American society.
We examine how policies, institutional practices, and legal decisions shape access to education. This includes analyzing the effects of recent changes to postsecondary admissions, the impacts of geography and income, and the importance of different forms of knowledge. Our critical and disaggregated analysis reveals how different factors combine to create vastly disparate educational pathways and outcomes.
Our research explores the connected relationships of job quality, wage dynamics, and workforce participation, revealing how economic and labor policies shape opportunity over time. By analyzing data through nuanced demographic and geographic lenses, we move beyond general trends to uncover the deeper patterns that influence economic prosperity.
Our work examines how administrative processes impact access to healthcare, nutrition, housing, and environmental safety. In rural communities, where health infrastructure is often fragile, we document the effects of geographic isolation, economic stability, and policy changes, using disaggregated data to reveal challenges and community strengths.
Meet the Foundational Contributors
IPSG was built through the intellectual generosity and strategic insight of a distinguished group of scholars and leaders who contributed to its early formation. These Foundational Contributors offered in-kind labor, mentorship, and critical feedback that helped shape both the conceptual architecture of our research agenda and the institutional design of the organization.
With early seed support from the UCLA Latina Futures 2050 Lab, what began as a transformative research initiative evolved into an independent institute committed to sustaining rigorous, justice-centered scholarship across sectors.
Our Foundational Contributors are nationally recognized leaders in their respective fields. Their engagement during IPSG’s formative stage strengthened the legal, empirical, and organizational foundations upon which our work now stands.
We remain deeply grateful for their role in helping bring IPSG into being.
Given our collaborative approach, IPSG has established university research partnerships with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Latina Futures 2050 Lab and the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity at Howard University.
IPSG is fiscally sponsored by Education Leaders of Color (EdLoc), which provides administrative infrastructure to support the organization’s research, partnerships, and public engagement activities.
To support our organizational development and ensure strong governance and compliance practices, IPSG receives pro bono legal counsel from Bass, Berry & Sims PLC, a nationally recognized law firm advising on nonprofit governance, regulatory compliance, and institutional formation.
IPSG’s public-facing identity and communications infrastructure were brought to life in partnership with Good Rebellion, a strategy and creative agency committed to building bold, mission-driven organizations and brands.
During IPSG’s formative stage, the Good Rebellion team engaged with us to provide strategic communications guidance, design leadership, and brand development to translate our vision into a clear, compelling institutional presence. Their efforts ensured that our intellectual work is matched by a visual and narrative identity capable of carrying it forward.
We are deeply grateful for their generosity, creative rigor, and belief in the mission of IPSG when we were just a seed of an idea.
